The plus one or the +1, is a sales technique for on the road reps, canvasser or when doing face to face presentations and meetings.
When doing face to face meetings the travel time particularly in Sydney and Melbourne can take easy an hour each way. Turning a one hour meeting into a 3 hour meeting means you can only fit in a few meetings per day.
As an on the road rep I had daily meeting targets between 8 ad 50 face to face meetings per day. Which is nearly impossible unless you work geographically.
So whenever you book a meeting you book a +1. Or at least one other meeting in the same area as your meeting. The other version of the +1 is that whenever you make a meeting you do a drop in, to the two neighbours on either side of your meeting to maximise your travel time. People can be quite receptive to ‘hi I was just showing our service to Mary next door, do you have a minute’?
